In the handball GDR league of women , the BSG unit / Sirokko Neubrandenburg won the North Staffel in the 1988/89 season and managed to immediately return to the handball GDR league . The BSG Union Halle-Neustadt won the season south and was promoted to the upper house as an absolute newcomer.

North season

The company sports community (BSG) Einheit / Sirokko Neubrandenburg secured the relay victory and rose immediately back to the handball GDR league . Of the three newcomers from the handball GDR district league, the BSG Aufbau / Chemie Schwerin and BSG Chemie PCK Schwedt went back to the third class after just one year. The BSG Empor Brandenburger Tor occupied the tenth place in the table, which entitled to relegation. In this they asserted themselves against the BSG Progress Weissenfels from the southern relay and held the class.

Season south

The BSG Union Halle-Neustadt did not lose points until the 16th matchday, secured the relay victory and rose as an absolute newcomer to the handball GDR league . With the company sports community (BSG) Blaue Schwerter Meissen, the relegated from the league came in fifth place. The two newcomers from the handball GDR district league ASG Vorwärts Eisenach and BSG Lokomotive Delitzsch were able to keep the class with places seven and eight. The six-time champion in indoor handball progress Weissenfels lost in the relegation against North Representative Empor Brandenburg Gate and after 11 years of membership was relegated to the third division. Weißenfels was accompanied by Wismut Schneeberg after a six-year guest appearance and Motor Schönau, who belonged to the handball GDR league for two years.
