Hannes Lindemann
Hans-Günther "Hannes" Lindemann (* December 28, 1922 ; † April 17, 2015 ) was a German doctor , sailing pioneer , canoeist and author who became famous for crossing the Atlantic with very small boats.
Life
From 1955 onwards, in several self- experiments, he tested the possibilities that a shipwrecked person has to survive under extreme psychological and physical stress on the high seas. 1955 he navigated in a 7.70 m x 0.70 m wide and about 600 kg, especially in Liberia made Dugout , the Liberia , and the following year with an even smaller Folding (5.20 m × 0.87 m, 27 kg), Liberia III , the Atlantic.
For this purpose, Lindemann equipped a standard two-seater Klepper folding boat of the Aerius II type with 60 canned food, 96 milk and 72 beer cans and 3 liters of water and crossed the Atlantic from the Canary Islands to St. Martin in the Netherlands Antilles . Since he carried a sextant for navigation , a sea anchor for breaks and fishing accessories, but did without a stove, he ate the caught fish raw. Lindemann aroused doubts about Alain Bombard's thesis, which was discussed at the time, that shipwrecked people could meet their drinking water needs solely from the salt water or the meat of caught fish: he only survived through the addition of rainwater that was also caught . In the 72 days of the Atlantic crossing, he lost 25 kilograms of body weight and survived several hurricanes and capsized twice . He attributed his success to the careful mental preparation of his journey through autogenic training and autosuggestion .
Lindemann was then successful as a book author: The logbook-like report of his first journeys is just about the ocean , A man, a boat, two continents describes the experiences of a third Atlantic crossing in 1960 and sums up conversations with African statesmen and with Albert Schweitzer , with whom he one For a long time worked as a doctor in Lambaréné ( Gabon ). He wrote several works on the subject of autogenic training , worked as a health pedagogue for the German Red Cross and had a teaching position at the University of Bonn on the subjects of autogenic training and mental hygiene. His guidebooks appeared in numerous editions.
Hannes Lindemann last lived in Bonn - Bad Godesberg .
