Hanns Benda

Hanns Benda (born August 19, 1877 in Metz , † February 27, 1951 in Malente ) was a German naval officer , most recently an admiral or chief admiral in the navy during the Second World War .

Civil and military careers

Civilian career until March 1904

Hanns Benda was born in Metz , Alsace-Lorraine , in 1877 , which was part of the German Empire until 1918 . He studied from 1896 to 1899 at the University of Jena Jura and entered on March 1, 1899 as a midshipman in the Imperial Navy one. On October 18, 1899, he was promoted to lieutenant in the reserve and then began to work in his civilian profession. From March 1, 1900, he worked as a trainee lawyer at the Weimar Regional Court , and from September 3, 1901 in the public prosecutor's office there . Then he was trained as a lawyer from December 3, 1901, also in Weimar . From June 3, 1902 onwards, Benda was employed by the Weimar District Court and from August 1, 1902 as an assistant judge at the regional court there. On November 6, 1903, he was promoted to court assessor.

Further military career in the Imperial Navy

Benda then rejoined the navy on March 1, 1904 and was employed in the naval directorate in Wilhelmshaven until September 30, 1907 . On 14 July 1904 he was appointed extra-budgetary Marineintendanturassessor transported and On 1 October 1905 was promoted to budget moderating Marineintendanturassessor . During this time he also completed training courses at the engineering and deck officers' school, also in Wilhelmshaven. On October 1, 1907, Benda was transferred to the Reichsmarineamt , where he was employed in the central administration of the Kiautschou lease area . This use ended on April 17, 1908. Subsequently, he was reassigned to the naval directorate in Wilhelmshaven, where he was employed in the directorate of the 4th department and as deputy station director. From March 1, 1909, he was then appointed head of the 9th Department of the Naval Directorate. During this period of service, Benda was promoted to the Naval Directorate on May 13, 1909 . From July 6, 1914 to July 15, 1919, Benda was again employed in the Reichsmarineamt, this time as an advisor and department head.

Military career in the Reich and Kriegsmarine

In the Reichsmarine , which emerged from the Imperial Navy after the First World War , Benda initially became an advisor to the head of the Admiralty . During this period of service the following promotions took place: on July 25, 1919 to the Real Admiralty Council and Council III. Class , on November 1, 1919 to the Real Admiralty Council and Lecturing Council and on April 1, 1920 to the Ministerial Council . From September 15, 1920 to May 31, 1935, Benda was then a consultant in the staff of the naval leadership , from January 1, 1935 as a ministerial director . From June 1, 1935, Benda was Head of Department in the General Naval Office (B), the naval management renamed the Kriegsmarine on the same day. Benda held this post until October 31, 1939 and was then on November 1, 1939, while being promoted to Ministerial Director, Chief of the Navy Administration Office (C) of the Navy. Transportations in this service were the Assistant Secretary with the personal rank of admiral on 19 August 1942 and the the Admiral chief staff director on May 1, 1944. On March 1, 1945 Benda was finally on leave and went on 30 April 1945 in pension .
