Hans-Arend Feindt (born October 29, 1921 ; † February 2, 2002 ) was a German naval officer , most recently as rear admiral in the German Navy .

Life

World War II and post-war period

Feindt joined the Navy on December 1, 1939 as an officer candidate , having previously received a certificate of maturity instead of an Abitur . He began his training with the 7th ship master department on Dänholm on Rügen across from Stralsund . This was followed by internships as a midshipman on the sailing training ship Horst Wessel , the Schleswig-Holstein liner and with the 1st minesweeping flotilla, before he completed his officer training at the Mürwik Naval School with the main sea officer examination.

Feindt then reported for training for service on submarines and then became an officer on watch on a boat of the 7th U-Flotilla in St. Nazaire . On April 1, 1942, he was promoted to lieutenant at sea . After further training, he took over command of U 758 on April 4, 1944 and, at the age of only 22, became one of the youngest U-boat commanders in the Navy. After a first short patrol in June 1944, the boat was equipped with a snorkel , and then it was made for another, last mission, which ended in Bergen in October 1944 . The boat was then returned to Germany and destroyed by aerial bombs in Kiel on March 16, 1945 .

After the end of the war, Feindt took up civilian employment as a commercial employee in various industries.

Service in the German Navy

On January 16, 1956, Feindt joined the newly founded German Navy. This was followed by activities in the naval command and admiral staff training in the French navy . In April 1963, Feindt, as Korvettenkapitän, became head of the building instruction group for the new frigate Lübeck , and after its commissioning on July 6, 1963, its first officer . This was followed by six months in command on the Danube tender, which was used as a training ship . On October 1, 1964, he took command of the frigate Augsburg . During this time in command, which lasted until March 31, 1966, he was promoted to frigate captain.

In 1966 Feindt became a teaching staff officer at the School for Inner Leadership in Koblenz . In 1968 he became adjutant to the federal ministers of defense Gerhard Schröder and Helmut Schmidt . On December 14, 1970, Feindt became the commander of the 2nd destroyer squadron as captain at sea and led it until March 28, 1973.

In April 1973, Feindt was appointed Flotilla Admiral head of the deployment staff for the Naval Support Command, whose leadership as commander he took over on October 1, 1974 and held until March 1979. This was followed by his last active employment as the commander of the Schleswig-Holstein Territorial Command in the rank of rear admiral. Feindt retired on March 31, 1982.

Further activity

After his retirement, Feindt was President of the German Navy Federation for seven years .
