Athletic career

Bentrup began playing football at SV Atlas Delmenhorst , which he left for Bremer SV . With the club he rose in 1978 to the Oberliga Nord , the season 1978/79 he finished with the club in 13th place in the table. He then moved to SV Arminia Hannover in the 2nd Bundesliga after an already decided move to FC St. Pauli had failed due to the license withdrawal for the Hamburg district club. In the second division season 1979/80 he scored five goals in 24 season games, at the end of the season he rose with the club in the Oberliga Nord. He then returned to SV Atlas Delmenhorst, who also played in the major league. In the season 1981/82 he was the second best goalscorer in the league with 19 goals this season behind the once more successful Wilfried Feldhaus .

In 1982 Bentrup moved to southern Germany and joined the southern Baden upper division club Offenburger FV . Under coach Klaus Blawert , the club fought a duel for the third division championship with SSV Ulm in 1846 , and despite Bentrup's 13 goals this season, it was only second in the table. This qualified the team for the German Amateur Championship in 1983 , but failed there after a 6-0 defeat in the semi-finals against the reserve team of FC Bayern Munich . In the course of the following season he was looked after by five different coaches, including the curiosity with Manfred Krafft , who only two game days after his commitment in early November 1983 made use of a contractual special right of termination and accepted an offer from 1. FC Kaiserslautern . Nevertheless, it was enough again for the runner-up, in the German amateur championship in 1984 Bentrup won the title with the club after a 4-1 victory in the final against SC Eintracht Hamm . However, he was not actively involved.

Then Bentrup returned again to SV Atlas Delmenhorst, who now played in the Association League Lower Saxony . After only one season he moved on to Bremer SV again. Here he was champion of the Association League Bremen , after the Oberliga season 1986/87 he ended his career.
