Hans-Günther Sunday

Hans-Günther Sunday (* 25. June 1938 in Kassel ) is a German microbiologist and emeritus professors .

Live and act

Sonntag attended the Wilhelms-Gymnasium Kassel and passed the Abitur in 1958 after a one-year stay in the USA. He finished his military service in the Bundeswehr with the rank of lieutenant in the reserve. It was followed from 1959 to 1965 to study medicine at the University of Giessen and the University of Kiel with the promotion of Dr. med. in 1966 about immunological studies on silicosis and his license to practice medicine in 1967. From 1967 to 1975 he was a scientific assistant at the Hygiene Institute at Kiel University and completed his training as a specialist in medical microbiology and infection epidemiology . In 1974 he received his habilitation in the field of immunology (scientific work on transplant immunology), and in 1976 he received his habilitation in the field of medical microbiology (scientific work on M. tuberculosis and saprophytic mycobacteria).

From 1975 to 1980, Sonntag was senior physician at the Hygiene Institute at Kiel University. In 1980 he accepted the chair for medical microbiology and hygiene as well as director of the Hygiene Institute at Heidelberg University .

In 2001 he was also visiting professor at the University of Mostar and from 2000 to 2002 President of the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM).

Sonntag retired in 2004 and was named Honorary Dean of the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University in the same year.

University offices

Sonntag was Dean of the Faculty of Theoretical Medicine at Heidelberg University from 1981 to 1987 and Deputy Dean of the Faculty from 1987 to 1989. From 1994 to 2004 he was dean of the medical faculty at this university and at the same time a member of the board of directors of the Heidelberg University Hospital . He was also a member of the university's Senate from 1981 to 2004.

Scientific focus

There are more than 350 publications from Sunday. His scientific focus is: immunology of organ transplantation , characterization of mycobacteria , epidemiology of infectious diseases, especially nosocomial infections, pathogenicity mechanisms of MOTT, Legionella , Borrelia , Neisseria (national reference center for meningococci from 1980 to 2003), methods for standardizing the effectiveness tests of disinfectants (CEN) , Quality Management in Health Care and Medical Education (HEICUMED).

Memberships

Sonntag was also a member of the Military Medical Advisory Board of the Federal Republic of Germany (1986–2004) and Governor of the European Foundation for Quality Management in Brussels (2001–2006). He was also a member of the Heidelberg City Council ( CDU ) from 2004 to 2009 , and since 2010 a member of the board of the Heidelberg Academy for Elderly and the Kumamoto Circle of Friends as part of the Heidelberg – Kumamoto ( Japan ) partnership .
