Hans-Jürgen Krumm (born July 19, 1942 in Wuppertal ) is a German-Austrian Germanist and language teacher and language learning researcher.

Professional background

Hans-Jürgen Krumm studied German , English , philosophy , pedagogy and pedagogical psychology at the University of Tübingen ; he was a scholarship holder of the Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst , the organization promoting talented students of the Evangelical Church.

As one of the first professors for language teaching research and German as a second language , he co-founded the subject in German-speaking countries at the University of Hamburg from 1975 to 1993 . Here the establishment and management of the Central Foreign Language Institute and the establishment of a master’s degree in language teaching research were among his most important activities.

From 1982 to 1990 he conducted graduate colloquia at the Inter-University Center for Postgraduate Studies in Dubrovnik / Yugoslavia . From 1979 to 1982 Krumm was the spokesman ( dean ) of the linguistics department, from 1983 to 1993 he was a member of the Academic Senate of the University of Hamburg.

He has been working with the Goethe-Institut since 1969 , initially in the field of teaching technology and language didactics , and later in developing lecturer training and advanced training for German as a foreign language . From 1976 to 2008 he was a member and from 1992 to 2005 chairman of the Advisory Board for German as a Foreign Language and the Advisory Board for Language of the Goethe Institute.

From 1993 to 2010, Krumm worked as a university professor and head of the department for German as a foreign language at the Institute for German Studies at the University of Vienna and was the first university professor for this field in Austria. In addition, he held visiting professorships, short-term lectureships and research stays, etc. a. in Amsterdam (Vrije Universitet); Coimbra, Portugal; Bandung and Jakarta, Indonesia; Gothenburg, Sweden; Mendoza, Argentina; Warsaw, Poland.

Since October 1, 2010, Hans-Jürgen Krumm has been Professor emeritus at the University of Vienna . From 2010 to 2014 the following projects were at the center of his work:

  • Development of the specialist lexicon German as a foreign and second language (Francke Verlag 2010) together with Hans Barkowski
  • Managing editor for the revision of German as a foreign and second language. An international handbook (De Gruyter Verlag 2010) together with Christian Fandrych , Britta Hufeisen and Claudia Riemer
  • Development of a "multilingualism curriculum" on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture together with Hans Reich
  • Scientific director of the cooperation project between Indira Gandhi National Open University, Max Mueller Bhavan (Goethe-Institut New Delhi) and University of Vienna for the development of a Diploma in Teaching German as a Foreign Language for the training of German teachers in India
