Hans-Joachim Eckstein

Hans-Joachim Eckstein (born January 27, 1950 in Cologne ) is a Protestant theologian and New Testament scholar . The focus of his teaching and research activities are the theology of Paul , Christology and questions about the resurrection of Jesus Christ . As a non-fiction author, he became known to a wider audience through his publications, in which he takes up central issues of faith and life with the help of theological clarifications, poems and essays.

Live and act

After studying Protestant theology in Erlangen and Tübingen as well as the first theological exam at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen in 1975 and the subsequent vicariate in Meßstetten , Eckstein received his doctorate in 1980 on the “Concept of Syneidesis in Paul ”. Until 1990, he worked as a scientific employee and university assistant at the University of Tübingen. A job as a pastor of the Ev. State Church in Württemberg in university service until 1996. During this time Eckstein completed his habilitation in 1994 as a Dr. theol. habil. (Subject: Promise and Law . An Exegetical Study of Galatians 2 : 15–4,7 ).

Eckstein was professor of the New Testament at the Theological Faculty of Heidelberg University from 1996 to 2001 . From 2001 until his retirement in 2016, he held the chair for New Testament with a focus on gospel research at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen.

Eckstein has been a member of the Chamber for Theology of the Evangelical Church in Germany since 2004 . From 2004 to 2016 he was a member of the regional synod of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg and from 2002 to 2016 chairman of the board of trustees of the Evangelical Monastery in Tübingen.

In his teaching and work, he placed great emphasis on closeness to students and listeners, which was reflected in his commitment to student pastoral care, in Christian student groups (e.g. SMD ), a large number of lecture events and seminars, sometimes also in non-university settings. He is also the author and composer of a number of Christian songs. With these songs he was already on the road to events at home and abroad with a team at the age of 17 and two years later until he was 23.

In 2020 he received the Brenz Medal in silver for “outstanding services in church and theology”. With the highest award from the regional church in Württemberg, Bishop July honored the “bridge builder between theology and faith”: “As a teacher, the conversation between the church and the faculty was just as important to him as the connection between academic teaching and lived faith, also in exchange with the students . ”He had“ rendered services in many ways to mediate between people and groups of different piety in the regional church ”.
