Hans-Karl Lücke

Hans-Karl Lücke (born August 11, 1927 in Bartenstein , East Prussia , † April 30, 2009 ) was a German art historian .

Life

Hans-Karl Lücke was the son of a Prussian government councilor who moved with his family several times for professional reasons. Around 1936 the family settled permanently in Königsberg , where Hans-Karl Lücke attended high school. In 1942, at the age of 15, he was drafted into the army of the Wehrmacht to serve in the anti-aircraft gun. When he was later to be accepted into the Waffen-SS , he enlisted in the Navy , and in 1945 he was captured by the Canadian prisoners of war in Schleswig-Holstein . After his release from captivity, he settled in Ratzeburg , where he attended the Lauenburg School of Academics until he graduated in 1949 . In the same year he enrolled at the University of Kiel , where he began to study philosophy and history . During the course of his studies, he switched to art history, where he continued to devote himself to philosophy and the history of the Middle Ages . At the university he met his future wife, the art historian Susanne David (Lücke-David).

He was born in 1962 with the dissertation 'Eurythmia' and 'Varietas'. PhD studies on determinations of the perfect building from Vitruvius to Quatremère de Quincy . The following year, he started for the Central Institute for Art History in Munich with the development of the Alberti index , a text-related explanatory dictionary to the work of Leon Battista Alberti , where he worked until the 1975th In addition, he worked for the Reallexikon zur Deutschen Kunstgeschichte , which was published at the same institute , until he was appointed to the University of Toronto in 1969 . Until his retirement in 1996 he taught in Toronto and gave lectures on architecture in France and Italy. After his retirement, he and his wife devoted themselves to the afterlife of classical mythology in European art, while continuing to deal with the Italian Renaissance.
