Hans-Martin Helbich

Hans-Martin Helbich (born April 17, 1906 in Niederfüllbach , † March 8, 1975 in Berlin ) was a German Protestant theologian and general superintendent of Sprengels I of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg .

Life

Helbich was the son of Pastor Paul Helbich. He studied theology in Erlangen , Greifswald and Tübingen and entered the pastoral service of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria . As city vicar in Nuremberg , he was arrested by the Nazi rulers in 1934 and removed from his office. In 1935 he resumed his work as a pastor in Bad Steben . In 1943 he became state youth pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria, and in 1947 also head of the state youth pastors' conference in Germany. He participated in the development of the Evangelical Youth Office and worked in the all-German and ecumenical youth work. Helbich was the founder and first publisher of the employee magazine for youth work "Das Baugerüst" and published the youth magazine "Hand in Hand" for several years.

In 1956 Helbich became dean in Coburg . The Berlin-Brandenburg bishop Otto Dibelius called him in 1961 as general superintendent for District I in West Berlin. Helbich always stood up for the unity of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. In 1963, through a two-hour conversation with Nikita Khrushchev , he was able to influence the positive outcome of the pass discussions .

Awards

Helbich was an honorary doctor of the theological faculty of the University of Erlangen (1963) and was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1973) and the Bavarian Order of Merit (1965). The Hans-Martin-Helbich-Siedlung in Berlin-Buckow was named after him.
