Hans-Otto Binder

Hans-Otto Binder (born May 15, 1940 in Balingen ; † May 29, 2017 in Tübingen ) was a German historian . He was connected to Tübingen throughout his entire professional life, where he worked as a lecturer at the Eberhard Karls University and as a local councilor for Hirschau .

Life

Hans-Otto Binder was the son of a pastor and a member of the Confessing Church . He grew up in a Christian social milieu. He learned in the seminars in Maulbronn and Blaubeuren , where he graduated from high school. He then studied at the universities of Tübingen , Göttingen and Berlin . After graduation, he returned to Tübingen, where he worked on his dissertation on Otto Bismarck . Then he worked at the seminar for modern history at the University of Tübingen - first as an assistant, then as an academic councilor and finally as an academic senior councilor. The focus of his university teaching and research work was the 19th and 20th centuries. His most popular seminar topics were Franco-German relations , restoration , industrialization , Jewish history in Württemberg , World War I and the Weimar Republic . He worked for 30 years at the university and in 2002 he retired. In his farewell lecture he presented "Conflicts in Tübingen 1800 to 1880".

After he became a member of the SPD in 1966 , he began to be politically active. For one electoral term (1975–1980) he represented the SPD in the local council, three electoral periods - until 1986 - in the local council of his place of residence Hirschau. After that he was a member of the local association executive committee of the SPD. As a chronicler of the labor movement, he worked with great devotion to preserve the historical legacy of social democracy. In 1969 he met his future wife Roswith. He had been married to her since 1971 and had two daughters.

Since his retirement, Hans-Otto Binder has devoted himself more and more to Tübingen topics. For the " Tübinger Blätter " he wrote essays over the decades in which he highlighted personalities from literature and politics. After the Stadtmuseum Tübingen had not had a management since 2003 and dubious things had happened there (disappearance of exhibits), he became chairman of the Friends of the Stadtmuseum Tübingen association in July 2003, which succeeded - thanks to its meticulous work - in stopping the museum from decaying .

He also devoted himself specifically to National Socialism in Tübingen, a topic that had accompanied him since he was a boy, as he came to the conclusion that there are “more white spots than explored islands” in this area. In the speech for the presentation of the book Heimkehrertafel as a stumbling block , he expressed his concern in 2007: "Fighting against the willful oblivion", which was established and cultivated in Tübingen by the long-time mayor Hans Gmelin . In 2008 he co-founded the working group "Modern Tübingen City History", which dealt in particular with the coming to terms with National Socialism in Tübingen. From this working group, the learning and documentation center for National Socialism eV emerged in 2010 and became its chairman. He held this position until the beginning of 2016 when he declined to be re-elected for health reasons. In order not to leave the association without leadership, he took over the chairmanship provisionally until the next general assembly, which took place on April 28, 2017. But he remained an ordinary board member. The chairmanship of the association was burdensome because the programmatic name of the association was to be implemented: the association should find a seat that should also house an exhibition, a modern learning location and a documentation center with library. To do this, a precise concept had to be worked out, financial support had to be obtained and difficult and lengthy negotiations had to be conducted with the city administration. Although the city administration had agreed to hand over part of the basement of the former freight yard to the association, the area offered by the city at the beginning of 2017 is not enough to implement the concept developed by the association.

Hans-Otto Binder died suddenly as a result of a heart attack.
