Hans-Otto Schümann
Hans-Otto Schümann (born December 4, 1916 in Hamburg ; † September 21, 2014 there ) was a German entrepreneur , ocean sailor and sailing official.
Sailors
All 16 yachts from Hans-Otto Schümann were named Rubin . In 1973, 1985 and 1993 he won the Admiral's Cup with his boat Rubin as part of the German team . Schümann was a member of the Hamburg Sailing Club (HSC) and was chairman of the HSC from 1958 to 1999, then honorary chairman and until his death in 2014 a commodore . He was Vice President from 1956 to 1969 and 1973 to 1984, President of the German Sailing Association from 1985 to 1993 , and then Honorary President until his death in 2014.
Entrepreneur
Schümann studied chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe , but had to break off his studies to take over his father's company . After the Second World War , he built Hans-Otto Schümann GmbH & Co. KG into a leading manufacturer of Vaseline and paraffin in Europe. The company was taken over in 2003 by the South African company Sasol , but Schürmann remained managing director until 2005 . In 2008, the EU competition authority imposed a fine of 318 million euros on Sasol, the legal successor of Schümann's company, for a wax cartel . The price agreements are said to have been initiated by him during his time as managing director.
