Hans-Ulrich Keller

Hans-Ulrich Keller (born September 1, 1943 in Schleiz / Thuringia ) is a German astronomer. He is founding director of the Carl-Zeiss Planetarium Stuttgart (1976–2008) and professor of astronomy at the University of Stuttgart .

Life

Keller grew up in Vienna . At the age of 12 he bought his first telescope, at 14 he was a freelancer at the Urania observatory . He studied astronomy and received his doctorate in Vienna in 1967. From 1967 to 1970 he was employed as a research assistant at Zeiss in Oberkochen , from 1969 as a project manager for astronomical instruments . From 1970 to 1976 he was a research assistant at the observatory and planetarium in Bochum .

Keller was involved in the planning of the Stuttgart Planetarium and was its first director from 1976 to 2008. He also looks after the Welzheim observatory . Since 1997, Keller has been an honorary professor at the Faculty of Aerospace Technology at the University of Stuttgart.

Since 1982 he has been the editor of the astronomical yearbook Das Himmelsjahr published by Kosmos-Verlag .

Keller is chairman of the Society for the Promotion of the Stuttgart Planetarium and the Welzheim e. V. as well as chairman of the board of trustees of the Ellen-und-Max-Woitschach Foundation for ideology-free science . Keller is also a member of the Astronomical Society (AG) and the International Astronomical Union (IAU) .

On November 9, 2006, the asteroid (30844) Hukeller was named after him by the International Astronomical Union . In 2017 he received the Bruno H. Bürgel Prize .
