Hans Carl Freiherr von Werthern (born August 4, 1953 in Büdesheim ) is a retired German diplomat . Most recently, he was ambassador to Japan from 2014 to 2019 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1971 and graduating from St. Albans School , a high school in Washington, DC , von Werthern served in the German Armed Forces between 1973 and 1975 . A subsequent study of economics at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz he joined in 1979 as a graduate in economics , and was then 1979 to 1984 research assistant at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

He began his preparatory service for the senior foreign service in 1984, and in 1985 he received his doctorate at Johannes Gutenberg University with a dissertation on corporate constitutional law and the foundation: regulatory aspects of a new regulation with special consideration of the foundation company . After completing his preparatory service, he joined the Foreign Office in 1986 . After completing his training as an attaché , he worked at the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH) from 1986 to 1987 and then at the embassy in Vietnam and then from 1990 to 1992 at the permanent mission to NATO in Brussels .

Thereupon von Werthern acted as deputy head of training for the higher service in the Foreign Office in Bonn between 1992 and 1994 and then worked at the embassy in Paraguay , before he was deputy head of the Western Europe department at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn from 1997 to 2000 and last was Berlin . Having 2000-2002 Consultant for European policy of the FDP parliamentary group in the German Bundestag was, he graduated in 2003 a course at the Royal College of Defense Studies (RCDS) and studying in specialist International Relations at King's College London , which he with a master's finished .

From 2004 to 2005 von Werthern was head of the working group “Germany in Japan 2005/2006” in the Foreign Office and from 2005 to 2007 Head of Department for East Asia in the Foreign Office. He then acted as envoy at the Beijing embassy in the People's Republic of China between 2007 and 2010 and as a representative for personnel in the Foreign Office from 2010 to 2011, before he was head of the central department at the Foreign Office in Berlin between 2011 and 2014.

In March 2014, von Werthern became ambassador to Japan and thus successor to Volker Stanzel , who had retired in October 2013. In mid-2019, von Werthern retired and handed over the management of the embassy in Japan to Ina Lepel .
