Hans Carl (also Karl) Freiherr von Zwierlein (born January 3, 1768 in Wetzlar ; † June 9, 1850 in Geisenheim ) was an art collector, lawyer, Nassau landlord and politician and former member of the estates of the Duchy of Nassau .

family

Hans Carl von Zwierlein comes from a family of lawyers, the noble family Zwierlein . His grandfather, Johann Jacob Freiherr von Zwierlein , had a doctorate in law, lawyer and procurator at the Imperial Court of Justice . From his marriage to Dorothea Friederike, born von Wahl called Hubin von Gülchen, the father of Hans Carl von Zwierlein emerged: Christian Jacob Freiherr von Zwierlein . Like his father, he became a doctor of law, lawyer and procurator at the Reich Chamber of Commerce. On May 2, 1766 in Wetzlar he married Christine Friederike, née von Hopfer (* October 4, 1749, † April 15, 1823 in Langsdorf), the daughter of the Prussian privy councilor Johann Friedrich Erasmus von Hopfer and his wife Christine Elisabeth née Wolf von Schlimmenberg.

Hans Carl von Zwierlein married Maria Magdalena nee von Gülich (born July 10, 1772 in Wetzlar; † January 5, 1843 in Geisenheim) in Wetzlar in 1801, the daughter of the lawyer and procurator at the Imperial Court of Justice, Johann Philipp Gottfried von Gülich and his Mrs. Marianne née Rüding. The son Hans Constantin von Zwierlein emerged from the marriage, who was also to become President of the Nassau parliament.

After the death of his first wife, he married the poet Adelheid von Stolterfoth (1800–1875) on February 14, 1844 .

Life

Hans Carl von Zwierlein studied law at the University of Göttingen and graduated with a doctorate in law. jur. from. In 1787 he trained in his father's office, became a lawyer in 1789 and was procurator at the Imperial Court of Justice from 1793–1806. After that he lived as the sole owner of the Zwierleinschen Hof in Geisenheim.

On September 27, 1790 he was raised to the imperial and Bavarian baron class. In 1794 he was appointed Privy Councilor and Chamberlain of Nassau .

Between 1818 and 1847 he was a member of the first chamber of the estates of the Duchy of Nassau. From 1818 to 1831 (although he was not present in 1829) he was an elected member, in 1831 he was appointed a member for life (in 1843 he was again not present). In 1838 he was president of the first chamber. In 1819 he spoke out against the dissolution of the guilds without replacement and in 1831 advocated Nassau joining the Prussian customs union. In 1848 he was a member of the preliminary parliament .

He was known as a collector of church art.
