Hans (Johannes) Francke (* before 1435; † 1486 in Dresden ) was a civil servant, Dresden councilor and mayor living in the 15th century .

Life

Nothing is known about the origins and early life of Hans Francke. In 1449 he was a member of the Dresden Council for the first time, but left a little later to take over the office of town clerk. He was responsible for the entire city chancellery , the writing of all important papers and documents of the council, the keeping of the city and court books as well as the floor register . As the most important city official, he received a salary of 6 shock groschen, as well as clothing allowance and free accommodation. As a town clerk, he was also exempt from civil rights fees and floor payments.

During Francke's tenure, his salary was increased to 9 shock groschen in 1457. Additional income brought special tasks that were paid extra. An invoice from 1459 shows the payment of 58 groschen for the creation of a 29-page judgment.

In 1464, Hans Francke rejoined the council and was elected mayor for the first time the following year. In 1469 he was again mayor and, in accordance with the new council regulations issued in 1470, exercised this function every three years until 1483. In 1476 he is also mentioned as a hospital master.

estate

Francke died in 1486 and left behind a widow and five children. The estimate and division of his estate on August 19, 1486, which was recorded in the Dresden city register, provides insight into his financial circumstances. Accordingly, the former town clerk and mayor owned several properties in addition to his house, including a. a barn and two gardens in front of the lake gate , two gardens "uff der Viewydenn" (cattle pasture community, Wilsdruffer Vorstadt ), fields on the Elbe, in Hillegrund and on Tatzberg , a field at the Gießhütte and a vineyard in Kötzschenbroda . The total value of all the properties was over 300 shillings . This was offset by debts of 44 shillings, 12 groschen. In addition there were items of household items, u. a. Beds, pillows, linen and tablecloths, bowls and jugs. A third of the property was given to his widow, the rest in equal parts to his children. Francke originally also owned a house on Elbgasse , which was sold to Dresden mayor Lucas Feist as early as 1481 .
