Johann "Hans" Friedrich Brentel (born January 1, 1602 in Strasbourg ; † 1636 (?) In Vienna ) was a German draftsman and miniature painter .

Life

Hans Friedrich Brentel was the first child and the only son of the miniature painter and engraver Friedrich Brentel and his wife Anna née. Brackenhoffer and Anna Maria Brentel's older brother . He also received painting lessons from his father. Brentel lived in Strasbourg for a long time and worked in his father's workshop. In 1634 he traveled to the Netherlands, staying in Amsterdam at least from June 11th to August 22nd. The apparently close connection to Wenceslaus Hollarwhich can be seen in the clear references to his work both from Strasbourg and later from Holland - Hollar was staying in Amsterdam at the same time - in connection with the note in Elias Brackenhoffer's catalog suggest that Brentel was employed as Hollar's employee by Henry Howard , Earl of Arundel was kicked and began in May 1636. Hollar a journey through Linz to Vienna and Prague and back again over Regensburg should lead. The participants of the trip arrived in Vienna on June 25, 1636, where Brentel apparently died shortly afterwards because he cannot be proven as an artist there.

Among his drawings is a group of small views of Strasbourg and the surrounding area, very similar to Wenceslaus Hollar's Strasbourg views from the same time. There is also a group of drawings from the trip to Holland with views of Amsterdam and the surrounding area, numerous figure studies based on living models, v. a. from the Amsterdam theater, and six small landscape copies (one with the inscription "Hans Savri"), which again have close references to Hollar's art of drawing. The latest drawing by Brentel from January 18, 1636 with the inscription "Colonia", which depicts a view of the Rhine Valley near Cologne, corresponds entirely to Hollar's style. Signed miniatures by Hans Friedrich Brentel are not known, unsigned miniatures are probably among the work of his father's workshop.
