Hans Gerngroß

Hans Gerngroß (* between 1500 and 1510 in Schorndorf ; † (probably September 1564 ) in Stuttgart ) was a Württemberg painter who worked as a court painter in Stuttgart.

Life

Hans Gerngroß was a son of the Schorndorfer citizens Hans and Agnes Gerngroß. It is not known about his training or his first work. The oldest document that mentions him is from the beginning of 1536: together with Hans Schickhardt and others, he was paid for work that was not mentioned in Balingen . In the same year he was happy to be appointed court painter to Duke Ulrich - initially for six months, but he held this office until his death. His attitude suggests that he had a presentable experience. In 1536 he directed the painting work at the court, which arose in connection with the construction work ordered by the Duke after his return from exile. These were larger measures, in which Hans Schickhardt, Heinrich Füllmaurer , Albert Mayer, Marx Weiß and Erasmus Wenig were also involved. A year later he was in charge of the painting of the ducal chamber, which Hans Schickhardt and Hans Abel were also working on.

The documents give only sparse information about his activity, only a few jobs are mentioned that were rewarded in addition to his pay: in 1548/49 he painted a "cloth" that represented the ancestry of the House of Württemberg. In 1549/50 a painting on the same subject that Duke Ulrich sent to his daughter-in-law Anna Maria von Brandenburg-Ansbach to Mömpelgard . In 1553/54 he designed the coat of arms of the duke couple and the city of Stuttgart, which Martin Eisengrein needed for his iron stove. In 1560/61 he painted all court trumpeter flags and shields with the duke's coat of arms. Presumably he also painted and gilded drums and floats, as these tasks were part of the duties of the court painters. In 1562/63 he decorated a blanket for Duke Eberhard. His duties also included painting “little men” in court clothing. They were drafts of the clothes for all ducal officials and servants.

In the first years of his work in Stuttgart, Hans Gerngroß still lived in Schorndorf. It was not until 1540 that he was taxable for the first time in Stuttgart. That year he lived in the “second city quarter”, initially with the painter Thomas Fridlin . Since 1541 he had his own house. Although he lives and works in Stuttgart, Hans Gerngroß was a citizen of Schorndorf for most of his life. It was not until 1561 that he presented his man's rights letter in Stuttgart , issued by the Vogt and court of Schorndorf, in order to obtain citizenship in Stuttgart.

Hans Gerngroß was married to Elisabet Gerngroß, who survived him. No works by him have survived.
