Hans Graf (conductor)

Hans Graf (born February 15, 1949 in Marchtrenk , Upper Austria) is an Austrian conductor.

Career

Hans Graf learned piano as a child and studied piano and conducting at the Graz University of Music (graduated in 1971). He then attended master classes with Franco Ferrara in Siena and Hilversum and with Sergiu Celibidache in Bologna and studied for a year at the Leningrad Conservatory with Arvīds Jansons (state scholarship).

In 1979 he won first prize at the Karl Böhm Competition in Salzburg. In 1980 he made his debut with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and in 1981 at the Vienna State Opera . Engagements at opera houses in Munich, Paris, Rome, Berlin, at the Salzburg Festival , Maggio Musicale Fiorentino , Aix-en-Provence , Savonlinna and in 1987 the debut with the Vienna Philharmonic followed in the 1980s . He has worked mainly in the USA since the 1990s. In addition to a collaboration with the Boston Symphony Orchestra that has existed since 1995 , she has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra , Philadelphia Orchestra , New York Philharmonic , Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic .

From 1984 to 1994 he was chief conductor of the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra and the Salzburg State Theater , where he directed thirty opera premieres. Graf was then chief conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi (1994–1996), the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (1994–2002), the Orchester National Bordeaux Aquitaine and the Opéra National de Bordeaux (1998–2004), as well as the Houston Symphony (2001–2013) ).

In summer 2013 Graf returned to the Salzburg Festival with three programs. 2013–2015 he was professor for orchestral conducting at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg . In 2017 he appeared at the summer festivals in Tanglewood (with the Boston Symphony Orchestra) and Aspen , and in 2018 at the Bravo Festival Vail with the New York Philharmonic.

In July 2019 Hans Graf was appointed chief conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra from 2020/21.
