Life

He was born as the youngest of five children of a Protestant pastor in Karvin , Pomerania . In 1879 the family moved to Stolzenhagen near Stettin . After graduating from high school in Gartz a./Oder , Hartig went to Berlin to study chemistry there according to his father's wishes. After being drafted into the military (1897), the family moved to Berlin in 1898 and re-enrolled at the Berlin Academy. In 1900 Hartig was accepted into the "landscape class" of Eugen Bracht (1842–1921), whose master class he became. In 1913 the artist spent a few months in Neuwarp on the Stettiner Haff , where he became an honorary citizen.

In 1901 Hartig's first participation in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition was a sensational success: on the very first day, the Prussian state purchased his painting Odertal (lost in the war) for the National Gallery . In 1902 he followed his teacher Bracht to Dresden with six other students, where he finished his studies in 1906 and then returned to Berlin.

In 1906 Hartig took part in the exhibitions of the Berlin Secession . In 1907 a study trip to Masuria followed (“to paint snow”) with a focus on brightly colored painting. Together with Hans Klohss (1879–1954), Ernst Kolbe , Alfred Liedtke , Leonhard Sandrock and Karl Wendel, he founded the Berliner Landschafter Club . In 1909 Hartig exhibited his painting Im Winterhafen at the German Art Exhibition in New York . In 1910 he was unanimously awarded the Helfft Prize at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition for his painting Garten am Meer . He was also awarded first prize in the lithography competition.

In 1911 Hartig's storm surge cycle was created on Sylt (a painting of the cycle is in the National Gallery in Berlin ). Participation in the painting of the Schöneberg Town Hall (1913) was followed by membership in the jury of the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1914. Another success was his invitation as a representative of Germany to the 11th Venice Biennale and the acquisition of the painting Thaw by the museum there.

Further work

Hartig was a co-founder of the Pomeranian Artists Association in 1916 and has been regularly active in Neuwarp since then. In 1927 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Neuwarp, and in 1929 he took part in the exhibition Hundred Years of Berlin Art . In 1932/33 Hartig received the honorary award of the Berlin Artists' Association .
