Julius help
Julius Eduard Wilhelm Helfft (born April 6, 1818 in Berlin , Prussia , † March 28, 1894 ibid) was a German landscape and architecture painter .
Live and act
Julius Helfft studied as a student of the landscape painter Wilhelm Schirmer from 1835 at the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. At the academy exhibitions since 1836 he showed landscape and architectural views from the Mark Brandenburg , Saxony , Bohemia and Silesia and after his first study visit to Florence , Rome , Naples and Genoa , between 1843 and 1847, also vedute from Italian regions. Friedrich Wilhelm IV acquired some of his paintings, at least six of which were hung in Prussian castles. In the last years of his life, Helfft was no longer able to do his job because of an eye problem.
He bequeathed some of his sketches and studies to the Berlin Art Academy and set up a foundation , the proceeds of which the Academy paid out to the winner every year after a competition for young German landscape painters as the “Julius Helfftschen Prize” to finance a one-year study trip. Some of his works were destroyed in World War II or were lost as spoils of war.
