Hans Hofmann von Grünbühel

Hans Hofmann Freiherr zu Grünbühel and Strechau (* around 1492; † July 18, 1564 on the Styraburg ) was an Austrian nobleman and court official.

Life

Hans Hofmann von Grünbühel was born around 1492 as the son of Friedrich Hofmann, sovereign caretaker and judge. His mother Margarethe Püchler was heir to the rule of Grünbühel (also Grünbüchel ), which was eligible for the state parliament , at Rottenmann in Styria . After the death of Emperor Maximilian I , he traveled in 1519 as one of the estates deputies of Styria in homage to Emperor Charles V of Spain .

He gained the favor of the archduke and later Emperor Ferdinand I. From this he served initially in 1522 as archducal Commissioner and was in 1526 as a successor of Gabriel de Salamanca to his treasurer appointed. In addition, by 1527 at the latest, he was his secret councilor as well as captain of Wiener Neustadt and later burgrave of Steyr . In 1528 he acquired Strechau Castle as a family seat , which he had expanded considerably. With a diploma of April 14, 1535 or March 22, 1540 Ferdinand I raised him to the hereditary nobility as baron of Grünbühel and Strechau . In addition, Ferdinand I gave him the inheritance of the Supreme Court Master of Styria in 1540 and the inheritance of the Supreme Land Marshal of Austria and Styria in 1559. Hofmann acquired a considerable fortune that he increased in particular through investments in mining, he finally owned 24 manors and castles in Austria and Styria.

Presumably he worked with Leonhard von Fels and Wilhelm von Roggendorf to weaken the papal and Spanish influence. Hofmann also worked in negotiations with the Protestant princes. During his lifetime he was suspected of being a Lutheran . In 1556 he resigned his public offices and retired into private life. In the last years of his life he converted to Protestantism. He died in 1564 at the castle in Steyr .

Marriages and offspring

In his first marriage he married Potentiana, daughter of Wolfgang von Oberburg and Agnes Burggräfin von Lueg and Lienz. With her he had a son.

In his second marriage around 1530 he married Clara von Rogendorf, daughter of Wolfgang Freiherr von Rogendorf and Mollenburg, Burgrave of Steyr, and Elisabeth of Liechtenstein and Nicolsburg. With her he had two sons:

  • Hans Friedrich (* before 1535; † 1589), Councilor of the Inner Austrian Government, Supreme Hereditary Court Master in Styria, Provincial Administrator in Styria;
  • Ferdinand (* 1540; † 1607), Supreme Hereditary Court Master in Styria, Supreme Hereditary Land Marshal in Austria and Styria, Burgrave of Steyr, Captain of Wiener Neustadt, Imperial Court Chamber President and Privy Councilor.

The family of the Gienger von Grünbühl (Grienpichel) , named after ( Grünbühel Castle near Kilb ), descends from the patricians of Ulm and is not related to the Hofmann von Grünbühel.
