Hans Karl Barkow (born August 4, 1798 in Trent (Rügen) , † July 23, 1873 in Breslau ) was a German anatomist and physiologist in Rostock and Breslau.

Life

Born as the son of the Protestant pastor and later superintendent Christian Joachim Friedrich Barkow (1755-1836) in Western Pomerania , Barkow received his school education from his father. For only half a year he attended the grammar school prima at the grammar school Greifswald . From 1815 he studied at the University of Greifswald and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . He became a member of the Corps Pomerania Greifswald (WS 1815/16) and the Corps Neo-Pomerania Berlin (1817). He was led to anatomy by Friedrich Christian Rosenthal and Carl Asmund Rudolphi . In 1821 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . In 1822 he completed his habilitation in 1822 at the University of Rostock .

Since 1826 associate professor, he was appointed to the chair of the Royal University of Breslau in 1835 . From 1845 he also acted as director of the Anatomical Institute, which flourished under his leadership. In 1850/51 he was rector of the University of Breslau.

The Greifswald professor August Friedrich Barkow was a brother.

Honors

In 1828 he was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
