Hans Mattis-Teutsch (born August 13, 1884 in Kronstadt (Brassó), Austria-Hungary ; † March 17, 1960 in Brașov, Romania ) was a painter , graphic artist , art theorist , poet and art teacher .

Life

Composition, 1923

From 1901 to 1903 he attended the Higher Trade School in Budapest . This was followed by his early works, the "wood sculptures in vertical design". Between 1903 and 1905 he studied in Munich , then in 1905/1906 in Paris, where Wassily Kandinsky arranged for him to participate in exhibitions at the Salon d'Automne and the Société des Artistes Indépendants . He developed his artistic concept at an early stage, the principles of which he formulated in postulates that also gave goal and direction to Mattis-Teutsch's later work and his search for an absolute art that was deprived of objectivity. He later published his theses on the new art in the work “Art ideology. Stability and Activity in the Artwork ”, Potsdam 1931. In 1977 a new edition of the“ Art Ideology ”with an introduction by Mihai Nadin and an afterword by Elisabeth Axmann was published by Kriterion Verlag, Bucharest.

As an artist he joined avant-garde groups, such as the Berlin movement Der Sturm initiated by Herwarth Walden (where he also showed his first exhibition of paintings and graphics together with Paul Klee ), the Budapest group around the art magazine MA , the November group in Berlin, among others

1944–1948 he headed the Kronstadt Free Art Academy , which included a number of young artists such as Reinhardt Schuster, Verona Bratesch, Lajos Boros and others. At the same time he was chairman of the Association of Visual Artists , Kronstadt branch until 1958 (then officially: Stalinstadt; Romanian: Oraşul Stalin). Because of a conflict with a communist cultural activist of the regional party committee of the RKP Stalinstadt he was hushed up until the 1960s.
