Hans Steiner (born May 15, 1907 in Bern , † May 3, 1962 in Bern) was a Swiss photographer .
biography
Hans Steiner completed a commercial apprenticeship and initially worked in this profession in Davos . He learned to take photos himself while working in photo shops in Sils-Maria and Bern. In 1932 he began to take photo reports and over time worked for various magazines ( Sie und Er , Schweizer Illustrierte and Die Woche ) as well as daily newspapers ( Der Bund ). In 1938 he founded his own company in Bern. After the Second World War he traveled abroad on various occasions for advertising and documentation assignments, including China and Java (1947) and the Pyrenees (1953/1954).
Hans Steiner is best known for his portrait of Henri Guisan , taken in 1938 , which later became the general's official picture. His photo report about the first ascent of the Eiger north face in 1938, which the enthusiastic alpinist Steiner documented from an airplane, also attracted a lot of attention. After the Second World War, his photographic work increasingly shifted to advertising and product photography, among others for Loeb , Wander , Camille Bloch , Haco , the Swiss Cheese Union and the Swiss Army .
The estate of Hans Steiner comprises over 100,000 photographs, which the Lausanne photography museum Musée de l'Elysée acquired in 1989.
