Hans Stempel (born July 8, 1894 in Steinrechen , † November 2, 1970 in Landau in der Pfalz ) was a Protestant theologian and from 1946 to 1965 church president of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate (Protestant regional church) .

Life

Stempel grew up in Steinenken . He attended the Latin school in Grünstadt and then began studying theology , which he completed as a doctor of theology. During his studies he became a member of the Schwarzburgbund - connections Herminonia Munich (1914) and Wilhelmitana Berlin (1918). After his studies he was vicar and pastor in various places, such as Landau in the Palatinate . From 1926 to 1934 he was director of the seminary in Landau. He became chairman of the Palatinate Parish Brotherhood , which had joined the Confessing Church in the church fight against the National Socialists . More details about his behavior during the Nazi era came to light only late.

After the Second World War , a provisional regional synod was formed in the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate in 1946 , and Stempel was elected as President . At the first regular synod, Stempel was elected church president in the second ballot.

He was a member of the Christian Peace Conference that met in Prague in 1960 .

When Stempel retired in 1964 for reasons of age, the regional synod elected Theodor Schaller as his successor on March 16 . He had already received some votes when Stempel was elected in 1946, even though he was not a candidate at the time.

Since 1953, Stempel had been a member of the Presidium of Silent Aid , an aid organization that stood up primarily for imprisoned Nazi offenders. When, in October 1970, Stempel wanted to visit the last prisoners in Breda , the Netherlands , he caught a severe cold on the trip, of which he died on November 2nd. On November 6, 1970, the funeral ceremony took place in the collegiate church in Landau in the Palatinate in the presence of the Federal President Gustav Heinemann and the Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate and later Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl .

Awards

The official, albeit secret, stamp was the "EKD Commissioner for Pastoral Care of German War Convicts in Foreign Custody", that is, for convicted war criminals. In 1956 he received the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany with a star and shoulder ribbon, as well as the German Red Cross . Hans Stempel was a knight of the French Legion of Honor . A street was named after him
in Landau (Palatinate) as well as in Speyer, as well as in his birthplace Steinwend , an honor that has recently been questioned (2017).
