The Hansa-Brandenburg CC was a German flying boat in the First World War . The designer of the Hansa and Brandenburgische Flugzeug-Werke, Ernst Heinkel , initially oriented himself towards the Austrian Lohner flying boats and developed the FB type, a three-seater, which was delivered in small numbers to the German and Austro- Hungarian navies in 1915.

history

In 1916 Heinkel designed a single-seater flying boat with a wooden hull and named it "CC" after the initials of the company owner, Camillo Castiglioni . The CC flying boat - not to be confused with the Hansa-Brandenburg KDW seaplane - was intended to be used as a fighter plane. It had the typical star bracing of the Hansa-Brandenburg DI hunter. In February 1917, the first CC came to Warnemünde for testing with the Imperial Navy . After that a total of 35 flying boats from two production series were delivered, which were initially armed with one, then with two rigid machine-guns.

The flying boat was used by the German navy in the Baltic Sea in 1917, but was mainly produced under license by the Phönix Flugzeugwerke for the Austro-Hungarian sea pilots. These machines had 8 mm Schwarzlose MGs and were much more motorized. The Austrian CCs - also known as "combat double-decker water" - were assigned to the Austrian A-class flying boats (A.13-42 and A.45-49) and used over the Adriatic, where the faster flying boats fought fierce battles with the more agile Nieuport 11 delivered by the Italian opponents. The Austrian flying hero Gottfried von Banfield also flew the CC flying boat.

A45 trial threefold

In 1918 a machine (A45) was delivered on a trial basis as a three-decker.
