Hansjörg Riehm

Hansjörg Riehm (born March 2, 1933 in Herrenberg ) is a German pediatrician and former university professor who has made a name for himself in the research and treatment of hematological and oncological diseases in children.

Life

Riehm was born in Herrenberg in 1933. From 1952 to 1957 he studied human medicine in Tübingen , Kiel , Innsbruck and Berlin and received his doctorate in 1959. After his medical assistantship , he began his training in 1960, initially as a scientific assistant at the Pathological Institute of the Free University of Berlin . From 1967 he worked as an assistant doctor in the children's clinic of the Free University of Berlin and in 1967 passed the examination to become a specialist in pediatrics.

This was followed by a research stay at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York until 1969 , where he researched the biological characterization of the resistance of tumor cells to cytostatics. He completed his habilitation in 1970 on the topic of mechanisms of cellular resistance to antineoplastic antibiotics in in vitro studies and worked initially as a senior physician and from 1972 as professor and head of the department for pediatric oncology and hematology at the children's clinic at the Free University of Berlin. In 1984 he moved to the Hannover Medical School , where he took over the management of the pediatric-oncology department in the Pediatric and Human Genetics Center at the MHH.

After his retirement in 1997 he worked as a visiting professor at the Children Cancer Center of Dr. Boldrini in Campinas , Brazil.

The Hannover Medical School awards since 2000 every two years the "Hansjörg Riehm Award for excellence in pediatric oncology" help the children suffering from leukemia for research.
