Hansjürgen Karge (* 1941 ) is a German lawyer . From 1995 to 2006 he was Attorney General for the State of Berlin .

Life

Karge began his legal career in 1971 at the Darmstadt Public Prosecutor's Office. He then worked as a consultant in the Hessian Ministry of Justice and then at the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe. After the fall of the Wall, he was summoned to Suhl to set up a public prosecutor's office there. He then worked for the Marburg public prosecutor's office until 1995.

Karge was Attorney General for the State of Berlin from 1995 to 2006 . He was head of the largest public prosecutor in Germany. From the beginning he was controversial in the authority, his management style was considered self-arguing, public prosecutors subordinate to him would rather leave Berlin than remain subordinate to him. After he accused the Berlin Senator of Justice, Karin Schubert , in connection with the Berlin banking scandal, of having promised too much to the population in solving the case, the Berlin House of Representatives voted out Karge as attorney general for Berlin. He sued the Administrative Court in Berlin against being voted out of office and was right, so that he was allowed to keep his office. He later headed the 2005 soccer betting scandal, among other things .

In 2005, the then leader of the Greens in the Berlin House of Representatives, Volker Ratzmann, reported Karge for publicly calling for criminal acts , because he said at a CDU party congress on the subject of juvenile delinquency that he could not "forbid a slap" when bringing up children.

After his retirement , Karge said on August 1, 2010 on the ARD talk show Anne Will that he would advise his daughter not to report her to the police in the event of rape. This statement sparked a wave of indignation in the public, especially colleagues in the police and the public prosecutor's office expressed complete incomprehension that their efforts to raise awareness rates and better deal with rape victims were in fact thwarted by such statements.
