Volker Ratzmann (born March 23, 1960 in Helmstedt ) is a German politician from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen and a lawyer . He was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives, where he was one of the two group leaders . In 2012 he became head of the department and head of the political department of the state representation of Baden-Württemberg . From May 2016 to January 2020 he was State Secretary and authorized representative of the state of Baden-Württemberg at the federal government. In May 2020 he switched to the private sector as a lobbyist .

Life and work

Ratzmann grew up in Bavaria (on an estate between Augsburg and Donauwörth ) and in Lower Saxony , in a village near Gifhorn on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath . In 1979 he graduated from the Otto Hahn Gymnasium in Gifhorn and took part in the fight against the Gorleben nuclear waste storage facility . After doing community service in Freiburg im Breisgau , he lived from 1981 in Berlin in shared apartments from the squatter scene at the time. a. with the brothers Udo and Harald Wolf . After studying law and political science at the Free University of Berlin , he has been working as a lawyer since 1991. His specialist areas of expertise are criminal defense and labor law . politics

In the 1980s Ratzmann was a member of the International Marxists group . In 1986 he joined the AL ( Alternative List for Democracy and Environmental Protection ), later Alliance 90 / The Greens. He is a member of the Pankow district association and is considered a pragmatist. In 2003 he became a member of the extended state board of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Berlin. From 2006 to 2010 he was spokesman for the federal working group “Democracy and Law” of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. In 2008, Volker Ratzmann announced his candidacy for chairmanship of the Greens. He wanted to compete against his party colleague Cem Özdemir , but then withdrew his candidacy. The impending birth of his first child was decisive for the decision. Instead he became a member of the federal party council of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen.

In 2001 Ratzmann was elected member of the Berlin House of Representatives and in 2003 chairman of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen parliamentary group. In the 2006 elections, he won one of the first two direct mandates in East Berlin. In 2011 he was able to defend the direct mandate in the constituency of Pankow 8 , but he was made responsible for the disappointing outcome of the House of Representatives election. Ratzmann barely managed to be re-elected as parliamentary group chairman, but resigned three weeks later due to the escalating wing dispute between the Left and Realos and resigned from his parliamentary mandate in 2012.

He took over the position of the federal political coordinator of the Baden-Württemberg state representation in Berlin. Half a year later he became head of the political department.

lobbyist

On May 1, 2020, Ratzmann will switch to Deutsche Post as a lobbyist . The Post justified this with the fact that Ratzmann is “very well qualified to represent the interests of the group on the national and international political stage”.
