Hansjoachim von der Esch , also: Hans-Joachim von der Esch (born October 6, 1899 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † May 10, 1976 in La Tour-de-Peilz , Canton of Vaud , Switzerland ) was a German diplomat and explorer.

Life

family

He came from a Rhineland family and was the son of the royal Prussian lieutenant general and bearer of the Pour le Mérite Hans von der Esch (1862-1934) and the industrialist daughter Elisabeth Hasenkamp (1874-1926). Esch married on May 4, 1927 in Helsingborg ( Sweden ) Marianne Sandstedt (born January 17, 1907 in Helsingborg; † ....), the daughter of the lawyer Hans Sandstedt and Hilma Henckel . This marriage resulted in two sons living in Sweden, the later lawyer Hans-Ulrich von der Esch and the royal Swedish court marshal Björn von der Esch .

After attending high school, Esch was an active officer in the First World War. After retiring from the military, he studied at a technical university with a degree in engineering . After he had also studied the Arabic language, he worked as a representative for a German company in Egypt from 1929 to 1939. During the 1930s he accompanied Ladislaus Almásy on expeditions to the Libyan desert.

During the Second World War , von der Esch initially belonged to the army , joined the Air Force in June 1942 and was employed as a clerk for special companies, including with the Air Force Command Southeast . In February 1944 he took over the picture position and the evaluation of the foreign press in Dulag Luft with the rank of major .

Since September 1952 he has been the Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany in Syria . In 1956 diplomatic problems arose between the Federal Republic and Syria because of the impending establishment of a consular mission of the GDR in Syria. In the course of the negotiations, von der Esch was recalled from Syria. At the same time, however, the federal government emphasized that this had nothing to do with the discrepancies because the ambassador's term of office had expired. In February 1957 von der Esch was appointed the Federal Republic's first ambassador to Morocco .
