biography

Harald Rofner is the nephew of Josef and Franz Gabl and the cousin of the ski racer Gertrud Gabl and the meteorologist Karl Gabl . Harald Rofner's father used to take part in ski races. So Harald Rofner himself got into skiing at an early age. 1967 was the Tyrolean Austrian junior champion in the downhill. In the further course of his career he was particularly successful in the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom. In the winter of 1968 Rofner was accepted into the national team of the Austrian Ski Association and he achieved his first podium places in FIS races : In Åre he was second in slalom and in combination, in Chamonix he was third in slalom of the Arlberg-Kandahar races .

In the World Cup Rofner launched from the season 1968/69 . Towards the end of winter he came in the points for the first time with tenth place in the slalom of Mont Sainte-Anne . In the 1969/70 season he was among the top ten five times and with fourth place in the slalom of Madonna di Campiglio he also secured a starting place for the 1970 World Cup in Val Gardena . There he was eliminated in the first slalom run. At the end of the season he reached another fourth place in the slalom in Voss .

In January 1971 Rofner achieved his first World Cup podium places. In the St. Moritz slalom , he was only four hundredths of a second behind the American Tyler Palmer , and a week later he was third in Kitzbühel. He achieved fifth place in the Slalom World Cup as the best Austrian in the 1970/71 season . At the Austrian championships he was national champion in slalom for the second time in a row. The 1971/72 season began Rofner with third place in the slalom of the Arlberg-Kandahar race in Sestriere . After that, however, he did not make it into the top ten and missed the Olympic Games. Eventually he also lost his place in the World Cup group and he had to start in the European Cup . In the winter of 1972/73 he was able to win a European Cup giant slalom, but did not return to the World Cup team.

1973 Rofner ended his career with the amateurs and he switched to the professional races in the USA , in which he participated until 1975. After his active career, Rofner headed the ski school in St. Anton am Arlberg until 1992 .
