Harry Hays

Harry William Hays PC (born December 25, 1909 in Carstairs , Alberta , † May 4, 1982 ) was a Canadian entrepreneur , farmer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada , who was both a short time member of the lower house and the province of Alberta for 16 years represented in the Senate .

Life

Hays, an entrepreneur and farmer, began his political career in local politics from October 19, 1959 to June 30, 1963, Mayor of Calgary . In the election of April 8, 1963 , he was elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party in the Calgary South constituency as a member of the House of Commons, but lost this seat in the following election on November 8, 1965 .

On April 22, 1963, Hays was appointed by Prime Minister Lester Pearson as Minister of Agriculture to Canada's 19th Cabinet and was a member of this until shortly after his electoral defeat on December 17, 1965.

A few weeks later, on February 24, 1966, on a proposal from Prime Minister Pearson, Governor General Georges Vanier named Hays Senator for Alberta . In the Senate, he represented the Alberta Senate District for more than 16 years until his death and was most recently vice-chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Domestic Economics, Budget and Administration and co-chairman of the Joint Special Committee of the Canadian Parliament between April 1980 and his death for the Constitution of Canada .

Harry Hays' son, Daniel Hays , was also a Senator for Alberta and represented the Alberta Senate District in the Senate of Canada between 1984 and 2007 .
