The Harry Klein is a techno club in Munich, in 2003 Optimolwerke was opened near the since 2010 Stachus is located.

Prehistory, naming

Old Harry Klein in the Optimol factory , from 2010 Bullitt Club

The Harry Klein Club is one of the two unofficial successors of the ultrasound , as the shareholders of the operating "Kleinharry GmbH " are recruited from the immediate vicinity of this former club at Munich's Ostbahnhof. The second successor is the Rote Sonne, which opened in August 2005 , because of the involvement of the former ultrasound booker DJ Upstart . The naming (Harry Klein is the assistant of the Commissioner in the ZDF - series Derrick ) is in a legal dispute justified the led the ultrasound with ZDF after a crime series of the sender of techno club with drugs had been linked. After the closure of the second location of the ultrasound with the end of the Kunstpark Ost on January 31, 2003, there had been suspicions within the scene about an ultrasound III , which had only been dispelled with the opening of Harry Klein on September 4, 2003 in the Optimol factory .

In 2010 Harry Klein, like some other clubs on the Optimol site, moved to a new location on Sonnenstrasse in downtown Munich, where a lively club life had already settled in previous years. It reopened there on June 24, 2010 at Sonnenstrasse 8 .

Conception

dance floor (with DJ Koze on April 30, 2005)

The interior of Harry Klein has a small footprint and is therefore only about the size of the dance floor of the former Ultraschall II and extends over two levels in the new club on Sonnenstrasse. “We said we'd give it a try and just make it really small, concentrate everything on a single central room where everything happens: a party hell”, describes co-operator David Süss the underlying idea. The entrance area in a small passage with the words - overridden in golden letters, and this is clear contrasts to the interior of the club, on the one hand by all sorts of "Harald Klein recorded music and music publishing" Pop - Kitsch , and by building huge canvases for avant-garde video projections on the side walls is shaped.

The overall experience of music and video projection thus clearly takes center stage, the "mixed art" of the DJ and the VJ are on an equal footing. This also corresponds to the operators' understanding of art: “ You don't need a museum for art . It is the trappings that we incorporate. When the art of good DJs and good video animators comes together and makes people feel particularly comfortable, then that is exactly what art should achieve. "

program

Harry Klein at the 2006 Love Parade

In terms of music, Harry Klein offers a modern supporting program for everything to do with electronic music. For this purpose, mainly artists from smaller labels from this area that are considered innovative are booked. Once or twice a month there has been a “Ein Herz für Elektro” party since February 2006, where mostly well-known artists perform in the small club on Thursdays, and there are seldom concerts outside of electronic music . The original concept of largely doing without well-known DJ names has now been partially abandoned due to the tough competition in Munich and numerous good acquaintances from the ultrasonic days. DJ Hell , Richie Hawtin , Tiga and Anthony Rother have already played in the small club.

From September 2004 to February 2009, the Friday evenings of the Munich scene institution Flokati House Club were organized by Marcus Kanzler . Since these house nights were already taking place in Ultrasound II , this step was generally interpreted as a “return”.

Residents of Harry Klein are and were DJ Karotte , Mellowflex, Stephan Kaussner, Julian Wassermann and Jonas Friedlich , among others .

Awards and special features

Just a few months after the establishment was the Harry Klein in readerpoll 2003 the magazine de: bug voted number 8 in the list of the best clubs in the election in 2009 it reached No. 3. In 2005, the Jahrespoll Groove landed it in the same category on 6th place, then 5th the following year. The renowned, international DJMag chose Harry Klein as 23rd place among the world's best clubs. The MTV - Moderator Markus Kavka was resident DJ and counted the club at the two-year celebration on September 3, 2005 in person "the best in Germany."

At the Winter Tollwood 2005 ( Theresienwiese ), Harry Klein and the Milchbar ran the GabiDom , a kind of futuristic club tent with video installations . The commitment was originally intended to continue at the summer edition of the festival in the Olympic Park , but this would have been impractical due to the later onset of darkness in June and the early closing time of the Tollwood (one o'clock in the morning). Instead, the tent for the 2006 World Cup was about 100 meters from the club in the parking lot of the Optimol factory and didn't open until 9 p.m. At the Summer Tollwood 2006, however, Harry Klein was present with the Electronic Garden , which sought to transfer the GabiDom concept to a beer garden .

During the time of the COVID-19 pandemic , Harry Klein broadcast live video streams of his DJ and VJ sets from March 2020 instead of the events that were canceled due to the exit restrictions in order to be able to stay in contact with his guests. The club also took part in the “ United We Stream ” campaign launched by the Berlin Club Commission and Arte .
