Hartwig Floto (born November 1, 1825 in Arendsee , † 1881 in Königsberg ) was a German historian .

After studying history and geography for three years in Berlin, Floto became a teacher at the Knight's Academy in Liegnitz . In 1847 he received his doctorate with Leopold von Ranke in Berlin with the thesis De sancto Annone. In 1855 and 1856 Floto published his two-volume work Kaiser Heinrich IV. Und seine Zeit , which he dedicated to his teacher Ranke. This work earned him the appointment as Professor of History at the University of Basel as the successor to Friedrich Brömmel . He gave his academic inaugural address on historical criticism at the University of Basel on May 2, 1856. The results of a lecture on Dante and the Divina Commedia led in 1858 to the work of Dante Alighieri, his life and works. In 1858 Floto fell seriously ill and had to give up teaching. Jacob Burckhardt was his successor .
