Hasselt is a district of the municipality of Hesel in the district of Leer in East Frisia . It is the seat of the water supply association Moormerland-Uplengen-Hesel-Jümme , whose task is the supply of drinking water to around 54,000 inhabitants from Moormerland , Uplengen , Hesel, Jümme and parts of Leer.

Origin of name

The place name Hasselt is interpreted as a combination of the Old Frisian terms for horse or tree-lined hill with the Old Frisian basic word for forest . Hasselt therefore means Rosswald or forest with individual hills . The name could also have been given by a hallway that was characterized by hazel bushes.

history

Hasselt

The place is mentioned for the first time in the 10th century in a property register of the Werden an der Ruhr monastery as Harsalae . It was at the intersection of the summer route from Leer via Holtland to Uplengen and the old military route from Hesel to Filsum and Stickhausen . Around 1300, the Order of St. John set up the commander of the same name in the settlement . The Count of East Friesland, Enno II. Initially moved these in during the Reformation , but had to return the newcomers to the Johanniter in 1574 after trials before the Imperial Court of Justice. These leased their property in Hasselt with noble tax privileges to two hiring workers. In the 18th century the order finally sold its farms in Hasselt to the tenants. In 1823 there were 41 people living in the village of Hasselt, spread over seven fire places. In 1848 there were 44 residents who lived in six apartment buildings.
