Location of the municipality of Hesel in the district of Leer | ||
Hesel is a municipality in the district of Leer in Lower Saxony and is part of the Hesel municipality , whose administrative seat it is.
location
Hesel is centrally located in East Friesland at the intersection of the East Frisian-Oldenburg Geestrücke with a branch of the Geest in the direction of Leer. The Hesel area is one of the highest regions in East Frisia. The highest point in the municipality in the Heseler Wald is 17 meters above sea level. The soils are rather sandy, around the Geest there were many moor areas, all of which are now peated and are significantly lower than the Geest. Hesel is drained to the north in the river Bagbander Ehe and to the south in the Holtlander Ehe.
Community structure
The community takes up a large part of the area of the integrated community of Hesel, not least because several small towns were incorporated into Hesel. The following villages belong to the municipality of Hesel:

history
Hesel is an old town. A prehistoric fireplace was found here that is around 10,000 years old. This is the oldest evidence of human culture in East Frisia. There are also many other prehistoric traces in Hesel. Traces of a 3000 year old cult site were recently discovered when a market was being built. The oldest house floor plan found dates from around 2000 BC. There are also numerous prehistoric burial mounds in Hesel. By the 5th century BC The Hesel area was continuously populated, followed by a gap in the settlement up to the early Middle Ages . Human settlements can be detected again around the time around 800.
Coin find
A treasure of around 800 Frisian silver coins was found in the vicinity of the Barthe monastery desert in 1838 . At first it was not known when and by whom the unusual pieces were made. Later comparative finds made it clear that these were coins from the Frisians from the 8th century. These coins are particularly widespread on the Frisian and southern English North Sea coasts. As a barter and commodity, the Frisian Sceattas are evidence of trade in the North Sea area. Hesel's prehistory is one of the best-researched in East Frisia.
Around the year 900 Hesel is mentioned for the first time in the registers of the Werden monastery . The Premonstratensian Monastery of Barthe was founded between 1170 and 1184, and the Hasselt commander around 1300 . Both had several outbuildings in what is now the municipality.
In the Middle Ages, Hesel belonged to the Frisian state municipality of Moormerland . After the time of the Frisian freedom , no local chief rule could be established because the soils of Hesel were too sandy and did not produce any wealth. The importance of Hesel can therefore be found in the local monastery complex. In the conflict between the chief Focko Ukena and the Freedom League of the Seven East Friesland , Hesel was probably the site of at least one argument. Hesel belonged to the " Hooge Loogen " of East Friesland.
After the establishment of the county of East Friesland, Hesel belonged to the Stickhausen office. Militarily, Hesel was poorly protected. In the Thirty Years War , Hesel was haunted by the Mansfeld fields. Among other things, the Barthe, Hasselt and Stikelkamp estates were looted or destroyed. Some of Hesel's settlement areas were abandoned after these incursions. During the roll-call war , Hesel was plundered by the insurgents of Leer, and in Prussian times the place was a target of the Conflan's troops in the Seven Years' War in 1761 . The residents resisted the occupiers and were able to drive them away. From 1764 the peripheral areas and the moor around Hesel were colonized.
Under French administration from 1810 to 1813, Hesel was the seat of a mairie , in the Kingdom of Hanover a bailiwick . In 1885 Hesel became part of the district of Leer. In the 19th century, a number of Hesel families emigrated to the USA . Some of them settled in South Dakota down and founded in Hamlin County the place Hazel .
During the last days of the Second World War, Hesel was the scene of a few battles. Canadian and Polish troops advanced from the south and entered Hesel on May 1, 1945. After the war, Hesel had about a quarter of the population as refugees.
On January 17, 1972, the municipality of Hesel became a member and administrative seat of the joint municipality of Hesel as part of the municipality reform in Lower Saxony.
Incorporations
On January 1, 1973, the community of Neuemoor and an area of the community of Großefehn ( Aurich district (Ostfriesland) ) with about 200 inhabitants at that time were incorporated.
religion
Hesel is located in the traditionally Lutheran area of the Protestant East Frisia. In addition to the Evangelical Lutheran Church Congregation Liudgerikirche , which belongs to the Regional Church of Hanover , there has also been an independent Evangelical Lutheran Church Congregation (SELK), the Kreuzgemeinde Hesel-Bagband, since 1937 . In 2007 a free evangelical congregation was founded , which converted a former commercial building into a community center. Even Evangelical Free Church Christians ( Baptists ) have a center, called in Hesel backstage . Organizationally, this facility is linked to the mother community in Firrel .
