The house at Hauptstrasse 22

The house at Hauptstraße 22 (formerly house number 319) is a listed building in the core town of Volkach in Lower Franconia . The house was used as a market pharmacy for a long time .

history

The building was probably erected in the second half of the 15th century. An inscription on the top of the house was decorated with the coat of arms of the Würzburg prince-bishop Friedrich von Wirsberg , who ruled the city until his death in 1573. Another coat of arms stone on the long side of the house shows the year 1574 with the coat of arms of the Wirsberg successor Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . The context in which the representative house was built directly on the market square is unclear.

Another inscription has been preserved inside the house, decorated with the year 1653. At that time an unknown married couple S. lived in the house, whose first names began with H and K respectively. It was not until the end of the 17th century that the name of the house's residents could be identified. In 1689, the pharmacist Bonifatius Sennfelder moved into the so-called “house on the market” and set up a shop here. Volkach's basic medical care had collapsed during the Thirty Years War , and so the pharmacist performed an important role.

Sennfelder lived in 1713 in the house, which is now at 350 guilders prized had been. In the following years he probably passed his business on to Johann Steiglehner, who was also a pharmacist. He died before 1730 and his widow passed the house on to her son Johann Michael Steiglehner Junior. The pharmacy business was also continued by Steiglehner Junior. In 1771 Johann Sebastian Demling came into the possession of the house, in 1773 his widow Catharina Barbara Demling owned the house.

In 1784, lived Kaufmann Michael Jeßberger in the house and business on the ground floor an action . In 1803 the house was converted into a residential building and was inhabited by Georg Kaiser Senior. In 1811 Johann Ott ran a shop in the house. In a description in 1815, the house was described in more detail. It was equipped with a cellar in which there was a wine press . This indicates that the owners were also involved in viticulture in addition to their businesses .

In 1815 the turner Georg Adam Lachner bought the house and probably ran a turnery on the premises. His son Georg Lachner owned the house in 1839, he bequeathed it to Michael Lachner II before 1852. In 1907 it was still owned by the Lachner family. In the same year the wood turner Hans Jacob bought the house and set up a wood and cigarette shop here. The business was continued by Josef Weiss.

The Kitzingen drugstore Friedrich Loy set up a branch in the house on the market in 1926. In 1965 the old house was largely demolished and everything above the cellar was rebuilt in a historicizing manner. A pharmacy then moved into the premises again. With the increase in tourism in Volkach's old town , a gift shop came into the house in 2001. Today there is a bistro with a vinotheque in the premises .

description

The former market pharmacy is listed as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments. It presents itself as a three-storey gable roof construction in a corner position. The house was built without the gable and with its representative volute gable points towards the town hall. The upper floors jut slightly forward, with the first floor being equipped with a round arch frieze on consoles. The second floor can be distinguished by a surrounding cornice .

The inscription stone with the real coat of arms

The details of the windows and dormers were standardized during the renovation in the 1960s. Today the house has a total of six shop window areas with historical-looking frames . The windows are mostly kept in simple rectangular frames, only a curved, four-lane window was created on the second floor. Originally, windows with drilled frames were also to be found on the ground floor .

On the first floor there is an inscription stone dating from the time of construction. It was decorated with the year "1 • 5 • 7 • 4". Underneath, two colorful citizens' coats of arms can be seen, on which two figures armed with lances were attached under the initials CH and AH. Next to it is the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn. However, it lost its characteristic rings during a renovation in the 20th century, so that the Prince-Bishop can only be deduced from the year.

The probably older reference to the Würzburg prince-bishops can be found in the gable of the house. It is the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Friedrich von Wirsberg with the crenellated walls. Two flower wheels and two small, red coats of arms were placed underneath as decoration. An inscription reads: " ANNO • DOMINI • MANE TINA • ETERNV". A stone tablet inside the house has the inscription "IHS / GOT IN HEAVEN ALL THE HONOR / THE PEOPLE FRID AMEN / 16 ~ 53 / LDM". Two hearts in a laurel wreath indicate the residents.
