In the context of interim use, it stands for a usage concept for properties that have previously been vacant for decades , in which, on the basis of a special contractual agreement, users can move in who undertake to maintain or renovate the building in exchange for residential and / or other uses.

The objects that are difficult to rent, have been neglected and have now been brought back to life and put to new use are usually located in exposed areas and are publicly marked as “guard houses”.

“The basic principle of the guard houses is very simple: Housekeeping through use. The use of the house prevents vandalism and limits weather damage, as it is quickly discovered and repaired by the users. "A lot of space for little money" is the maxim ... "

The idea of a kind of temporary use was born as a counter-strategy of urban development to the threatening neglect in the course of the rampant shrinking process after the fall of the Wall and the peaceful revolution in the GDR with massive real estate vacancies; The idea is now also being implemented in other cities such as Halle an der Saale , Chemnitz , Görlitz , Erfurt , Dresden and Zittau .
