The Alexander Koch house at Annastraße 25 is a villa in Darmstadt .
History and description
The Alexander Koch house was built in 1925 according to plans by the architect Fritz August Breuhaus . The builder of the elongated, two-story villa was the Darmstadt art lover and publisher Alexander Koch . In the 1920s, Koch's villa was a “popular meeting place for Darmstadt artists”.
Typical details of the house are the cantilevered, all-round cornices , balconies and canopies, which reinforce the horizontal effect of the building, and the balancing, vertically stretched windows. Characteristic of the style of the 1920s are the rounded corners of the risalit- shaped stairwell with a canopy. In addition, the stone- clad facade of the building is decorated with rather idiosyncratic decorations. The balcony supports, the entrance door and the south facade next to the terrace doors are decorated with reliefs , the fencing of the property is kept very simple. The iron parts of the entrance gate and the balcony were - in the style of the time reserved - designed in good craftsmanship.
During the Second World War, the building was damaged by an air raid on September 11, 1944. The facade of the house was rebuilt, albeit in a formally reduced manner, but “the interior layout was changed significantly”. Only "the entrance area and the staircase are largely intact."
The roof zone with its dormer structures , which was subsequently changed as part of a renovation , has a disfiguring effect. The interior of the villa and Koch's art collection no longer exist as they were auctioned by Koch in 1935.
Monument protection
The Alexander Koch house is a typical example of 1920s architecture in Darmstadt. For architectural and city history reasons, the villa is a cultural monument .
