Georges William Thornley (born May 2, 1857 in Thiais , † August 31, 1935 in Pontoise ) was a French impressionist painter, watercolorist , engraver and lithographer . His father was the Welsh immigrant Morgan Thornley.

He took his first drawing lessons from his father and became a student of Pierre-Luc-Charles Cicéri and Puvis de Chavannes . He learned lithography and created numerous lithographs based on the works of painter friends such as Camille Pissarro and Claude Monet .

From 1878 he showed his works at the Paris Salon and received an honorable mention in 1881 and a third class medal in 1888.

From 1892 he lived in the village of Osny , where he created many impressionistic landscapes. His later works show stylistic features of post-impressionism .

Between 1896 and 1907 Thornley delivered his pictures to the Georges Petit Gallery. The buyers included u. a. the French state collections, the Italian King Victor Emanuel III. and the French President Armand Fallières .

In search of the landscape motifs he traveled to Normandy , Brittany , Alsace , Provence , and also visited Venice .
