The Hawaiian bristle-tooth doctor fish ( Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis ) lives in the entire central Pacific near Hawaii , the Marianas , Palau , the Marshall Islands , Samoa , the Marquesas , the Society Islands up to the coast of Australia and Pitcairn .
It lives there over deep outer reefs with strong coral growth , down to a depth of 40 meters.
It is rare and lives solitary or in small groups. Young fish up to a length of five centimeters have a blue-orange patterned, net-like pattern. Adult animals have yellow-brown stripes.
