Hazel Barton

Hazel A. Barton (* 1972 in Bristol ) is professor of microbiology at Northern Kentucky University and well-known speleologist .

Live and act

Born in Bristol, Barton grew up in a suburb of Brislington Village. Her teacher, Martin Upson at the Brislington Comprehensive School , encouraged her early interest in science, particularly biology . At the age of 14 she visited a cave for the first time and developed an interest in cave exploration and in cave animals . Barton studied applied life sciences at the University of the West of England . After completing her bachelor's degree , she moved to Colorado , where she continued her studies at the Health Sciences Center Denver , which she received in 1997 with a Ph.D. for Microbiology and Immunology completed. She then worked for two years in the surgical department. Barton accepted a position as Professor of Integrative Science at Northern Kentucky University and is also an Associate Professor of Life Sciences .

Hazel Barton is also known as an avid speleologist. She explored caves on five continents , won several awards for cave mapping, and was the director of the National Speleological Society (NSS) and the Quintana Roo Speleological Survey .

She made several appearances on television including the CBS morning show before being nominated as a "Koeghan Hero" by Phil Koeghan in 2007 . Performances with Barton demonstrated the research into caves and the microbiological life that these harsh environments contain. She has published numerous publications on caving and extremophile bacteria and was co-author with Nancy Aulenbach of the 2001 IMAX film Fantastische Höhlen - In der Tiefen der Erde (produced by Michael J. Cudahy ). The result was a children's book that she published.
