history

The District of Columbia Speleological Society (SSDC) was founded on May 6, 1939 by Bill Stephenson. In the fall of 1940, those in charge of the SSDC proposed an amendment to the statutes that would transform the SSDC into the National Speleological Society . The members were informed of the conversion on January 24, 1941: 'On January 1, the society was reconstituted as a national organization.'

The Cave Diving Section (NSS-CDS) represents a special case in the organizational structure. After the first courses in cave diving in 1953 by the Florida Speleological Society , the NSS-CDS was founded in 1983. The main tasks of the nationally recognized NGO since 1987 are research and training; the NSS-CDS operates the world's most extensive training program in cave diving.
