Steps in the night (Alternative title: Web of Passion , original title: He Walked by Night ) is an in black and white twisted American film noir of Alfred L. Werker from the year 1948. Many scenes of the film were directed by Anthony Mann shot , which is not mentioned in the opening credits.

The criminal Roy Morgan is caught by a police officer while attempting to break into an electronics store in Los Angeles. He shoots him and escapes. Sergeants Marty Brennan and Chuck Jones are investigating the case. With the help of modern forensic investigation methods of the police laboratory specialist Lee Whitey, they try to track down the perpetrator. You come across electronics retailer Paul Reeves who unwittingly takes Morgan's loot on commission and sells it on. The police set a trap for Morgan in Reeves' shop. However, this escapes and shoots Sergeant Jones to a cripple. Using numerous modern investigative methods, the police ultimately find out the identity of the perpetrator and try to arrest Morgan at his home. At first he escaped into the sewer system, but was eventually caught on the run and shot.

Steps at Night kicked off in US cinemas on November 24, 1948. In Germany it was released in cinemas on February 24, 1950.
The film inspired the acting actor Jack Webb to develop the US television series Police Report (original title: Dragnet ).
