Heather M. Hodges

Heather M. Hodges (* in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American diplomat . She was the United States Ambassador to Ecuador until her expulsion .

Life

Hodges studied Spanish at the College of St. Catherine at Saint Paul ; she then earned an MA from New York University . She lived in Madrid during the 1970s . In 1980 she joined the US Foreign Service and was first posted to Caracas and then to Guatemala. In Washington she worked as a desk officer for Peru . In 1987, Hodges received a Pearson Fellowship to serve in the US Congress ; she advised the Senate subcommittee on immigration and refugee issues. In 1989 she became Consul General at the US Consulate in Bilbao . In 1991, Hodges returned to Washington as deputy head of the Cuban Affairs Division .

In 1993 Hodges became an envoy in Managua . From August 1996 to June 1997, Hodges completed a program for selected executives in the Foreign Service. She was then envoy in Lima from July 1997 to May 2000 and then in Madrid from June 2000 to July 2003. The Spanish government awarded Hodges the distinction "Isabel la Catolica - Encomienda de Numero".

From 2003 to 2006, Hodges was US Ambassador to Moldova . She was also honored by the Moldovan government. After serving at the US State Department, Hodges was sworn in as Ambassador to Ecuador in 2008, where she succeeded Linda Jewell .

On April 5, 2011, Ecuador declared Hodges to be persona non grata .
