Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered is the fourth studio album by the Swedish black metal band Marduk and the first by the band with new singer Legion . The title was borrowed from the line of text "Even the heavens shall burn when we are gathered" from the song Dies Irae from Bathory's album Blood Fire Death .

History of origin

The album was recorded in January or February 1996 at Peter Tägegren's studio The Abyss ; Legion is said to have cut itself during the vocal recordings. Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered was released by Osmose Productions in June of the same year . The album was followed by the Heaven Shall Burn Tour in September and October 1996.

Track list

Glorification of the Black God is an adaptation of Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky's A Night on Bald Mountain . All other titles were written by Marduk. The lyrics to Darkness It Shall Be and Dracul va Domni Din Nou in Transylvania were written by IT by Abruptum .

  1. Summon the Darkness - 0:21
  2. Beyond the Grace of God - 5:17
  3. Infernal Eternal - 4:41
  4. Glorification of the Black God - 4:52
  5. Darkness It Shall Be - 4:40
  6. The Black Tormentor of Satan - 4:15
  7. Dracul va Domni Din Nou in Transilvania - 5:39
  8. Legion - 5:55

Music style and lyrics

With the exception of the short intro Summon the Darkness and the slow track Dracul va Domni Din Nou in Transylvania , the band plays typical fast Black Metal with occasional melodies and deals with common topics like death and Satanism . Dracul va Domni Din Nou in Transylvania is about Vlad II. Dracul and his alliance with the Ottoman Sultan Murad II. The production is clear enough that individual instruments can be heard.

reception

Marius Mutz from metal1.info described Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered as a “well audible album” with a “quite gripping atmosphere” in most of the songs, which is untypical for Marduk, but Fredrik Andersson's drumming doesn't match that of the later Drummer Emil Dragutinovic; he gave the album 7.5 out of 10 points. According to Vincent of The Metal Observer , the album "contains some of Legion's best vocal moments, along with the always majestic performances of Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson "; he also praised "the excellent bass riffs that B. War plays on this album" and gave the album 8.5 out of 10 points. William York from allmusic complained that the band did not show the necessary emotional depth to make their tirades convincing; Compared to other fast-playing bands like Mayhem or Immortal , their music seems relatively one-dimensional. Rahul Joshi from Satan Stole My Teddybear Music Reviews praised the music as well as the lyrics, the title of the album and the record cover .

The title of the album inspired the metalcore band Heaven Shall Burn to their name.
