The combat helicopter regiment 26 "Franconia" was part of the air- moving brigade 1 and, as a flying combat unit, was responsible for the anti-tank defense of the German army . Home location was the Otto-Lilienthal-Kaserne in Roth in Bavaria in Middle Franconia .
history
The association was set up in 1979 as one of originally three anti-tank helicopter regiments, each with 56 helicopters of the BO 105P type, as Army Aviation Regiment 26 . In 1980 flight operations began with the new helicopters. In 1997, the insinuation joined the regiment from the II. Corps in Ulm for Luftmechanisierten Brigade 1 in Fritzlar, in 2007 1st Airmobile Brigade was renamed.
In 2003 the association was renamed Combat Helicopter Regiment 26 with the nickname "Franconia". At the same time, the reclassification began as part of the introduction of the attack helicopter EC 665 Tiger . In July 2011, the extensive infrastructure measures with a total volume of 150 million euros for the operation of the new weapon system were completed. The Roth Army Airfield now had u. a. about the most modern aircraft repair hangar in Germany. In addition to Roth, the Tiger was to be stationed with the 36th Combat Helicopter Regiment in Fritzlar.
In May 2011, the Federal Minister of Defense Thomas de Maizière announced that the combat helicopter regiment 26 will be dissolved as part of the Bundeswehr reform and the combat helicopter Tiger will be concentrated exclusively at the Fritzlar airfield , which is also the location of the airmobile brigade 1 and the location of the combat helicopter regiment 36 . In July 2013 there was a last open day and the so-called “Fly-Out” took place on September 25, 2013.
Operations ceased on October 31, 2013, and the last four helicopters left the airfield on December 16, 2013 in the direction of Celle. On March 27, 2014, the 26th Combat Helicopter Regiment was released from its mission and dissolved on June 30, 2014.
The infrastructure newly built for the Tiger on the airfield site was initially empty for a few years and is currently used to store decommissioned UH-1D helicopters. The regiment's barracks have now been almost completely torn down; the new Luftwaffe officers' school is being built here.

coat of arms
The coat of arms (internal association badge) shows an attacking hornet on a burgundy shield with a bow and arrow pointing towards the ground. The basic color of the shield symbolizes the beret color of the Army Aviation Troops, the bow and arrow of the hornet stand for the HOT guided missile, the armament of the anti-tank helicopters. The progressively designed hornet reflects the fight against armored targets from the air. The white and blue diamonds of the Free State of Bavaria are integrated into the wings. The base of the shield contains the stylized coat of arms of the garrison town of Roth, the regiment's home base.
