Heidi Grundmann (born July 18, 1938 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian radio journalist . As a culture editor and art critic at Ö1 , she was involved in the development and implementation of numerous innovative radio art projects. In 1987 she launched the weekly program " Kunstradio - Radiokunst " on the ORF cultural channel Austria 1 , which to this day produces and broadcasts radio works by international artists.

Live and act

Heidi Grundmann studied psychology and also played theater in the Innsbruck group Theater im Zentrum 107 . There she got to know some ORF employees from Studio Tyrol . In 1963 she became a spokeswoman for ORF Radio Vienna . This meant that an early wish had come true for Grundmann. In 1967 she moved to London to work for the BBC's German service . In 1969 she returned to Austria and in 1972 she was employed as a cultural editor at Ö1.

In 1976 she founded the program “Kunst heute”, which was dedicated to international contemporary art . In 1987 this resulted in the program "Kunstradio - Radiokunst", which Grundmann directed until 1998. In doing so, she implemented the innovative idea of not only reporting about art on the radio for the first time, but also allowing artists to use the airtime directly and define the medium itself as an art medium. In 25 years, the “Kunstradio” provided more than a thousand Austrian and international artists with broadcasting space and technical means. The editorial team continues to work with artists from the visual arts , literature, media art , music, performance art, net art , art institutions, festivals and museums.

In the 1970s, Grundmann had met a group of artists in the United States, Australia, and Canada who called themselves Radio Artists . They deal with the virtual space of the new electronic communication media. Her future husband, the Canadian media artist and communication pioneer Robert Adrian X, founder of ARTEX , who helped shape the show Kunstradio from the beginning and also brought the program online in 1995, also belonged to them.

Grundmann has been curating exhibitions since the early 1980s, for example the video part of the 1985 exhibition Art with Self-Sense - Current Art by Women Texts and Documentation in the Museum of the 20th Century in Vienna; 1994 at the same time in the Kunsthalle Tirol and in 2008 Art on Air - Radio Art in Transition at the Weserburg Museum for Modern Art , Bremen. Since 1984 Grundmann has organized and directed a number of international symposia and conferences. She is the editor of various publications, gives lectures and writes articles for magazines and edited volumes.

Heidi Grundmann lives in Vienna.

reception

In his review, the musicologist Golo Föllmer highlights the volume Re-inventing Radio, which she co-edited in 2008 . Aspects of Radio as Art developed the new format of Kunstradio - radio art conceived by Grundmann as "Wiener Kunstradio", a conceptual framework that is also used by other broadcasters, e. B. in Canada. This Viennese art Radio-term defines Robert Adrian about it, "to radio is not that in the studio, but happens of its receipt at the place where it mixes in everyday context with other sounds." The value of radio art does not consist in the transmission of an immanent meaning, but rather from the procedural emergence of importance for the listener , according to Tetsuo Kogawa ( radio art ) not as a transmitter-receiver model , but rather radio art as a 're-coupling'. The comprehensive anthology Re-inventing Radio contains key texts, statements by recent radio artists on the concept of radio art, media archaeological materials and establishes “references between radio art and conceptual and performance art”.

In 2012 the exhibition “Beyond the radio - 25 years of Kunstradio radio art” in the Weserburg Museum honored the “Kunstradio” founded by Heidi Grundmann.
