The Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium ( HGG for short ) is located in the Broich district of Würselen in the Aachen region . The private high school is run by the Spiritan Mission Society.

history

The Broich Monastery, as it is commonly known, began in 1903. The then Provincial Father Acker bought the former parish church with pastor's and sexton's apartment in order to open a mission school in the Aachener Land for the training of missionaries. The enthusiasm of the people in the area around Broich was great. The largest number of Spiritan missionaries came from the Aachen region. A larger school and boarding school building had to be built as early as 1910. After the First World War, despite hunger and hardship, the number of students rose to 160.

The time of National Socialism brought the closure of the school and the house, which served as accommodation for Siegfried Line workers and later for Russian civil prisoners. Towards the end of the war Broich was pretty much destroyed, so the Spiritans lived in the basement.

Due to the heavy, war-related destruction, the monastery church and school building were no longer usable. It was not until 1948 that school operations were resumed bit by bit. In 1953, the reconstruction work on the mission school was completed. This means that the first sextans will move back to school on April 1st . The work on the church tower and the old monastery church are still in full swing at this point, so that the church could not be consecrated until 1957 by the then Aachen Bishop Johannes Pohlschneider . Nowadays the striking church tower is a listed building

In the course of the extensive work, the high school was also given a new name. Since 1963 it has been called "Heilig-Geist -Gymnasium Broichweiden". From 1967 the full high school was established, which developed into the Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium in the northern district of the Aachener Land. The teachers today, including the headmaster , are lay people who, in the spirit of the Spiritans, lead the students towards a Christian-humanistic worldview.

The fathers of the Broich Mission House are involved in school pastoral care and also in the pastoral care of the surrounding parishes.

Others

The roots of the grammar school lie in the mission school founded in 1903 . Good education and upbringing were important to both of the Spiritan's founders, for their own brothers as well as for the people entrusted to them. In this mission and tradition, the Spiritans in Broich began their work and adapted their work to the current circumstances.

755 students attend the grammar school. 249 girls and 245 boys of them attend secondary level I, 141 girls and 120 boys attend upper secondary level . The grammar school's annual capacity is limited. For the 2018/2019 school year, 106 students were admitted to the 5th grade. At the end of the 2018/2019 school year, 114 students left the Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium after successfully passing the Abitur .

The “spiritanic profile” of the school means that the pupils have experiences that are intended to awaken an awareness of the problems in the One World and social issues. The social internship, a partnership with Mont Rolland in Senegal, the regular “Sponsored Walk” and the One World Shop should be mentioned in particular. In the social internship, the upper level students offer their services in hospitals, old people's and nursing homes, in schools for mentally and physically handicapped children, and in unemployment projects for three weeks. The internship does not primarily serve to find a job, but is primarily intended to facilitate human encounters. These encounters are intended to arouse affection and attention to fellow human beings who cannot get by without outside help, and to educate them to be more tolerant and respectful.

The SPD politician Martin Schulz attended the Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium from 1966 to 1974 and left it with the secondary school leaving certificate . Other well-known school members include Kai Havertz ( professional soccer player), Björn Gögge (musician and author) and the theologian Joseph Overath .

Roman Canal

On September 12th, the Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium received a section of an ancient Roman aqueduct. This pipe, which is almost two millennia old, was found during excavation work near Cologne and then restored by trainees from the Chamber of Crafts and divided into 22 parts.

The section of the former water pipe is now in the school yard of the grammar school. The entire project was subsidized by the Rhineland Regional Council.

The canal is looked after by the school archeology working group.

Teacher

The cabaret artist Jürgen Beckers was a pupil and later a teacher at the Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium in his youth.

Theater is ready for the stage

“Theater is ready for the stage” is a project started by teachers and students that puts on a play every year. These are sometimes based on older pieces and sometimes written by yourself. The teachers Verena Leenders and Wilfried Bonn as well as former and current students of the Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium are working on the project.

In 2008, just in time for the tenth anniversary of Bühnenreif, “My Fair Hotel”, the first completely self-written play, was performed. It comes from the pen of founding member Pascal Seifert and brought the theater group a new attendance record.
